Pajamas and Money is the name of the blog I recently created, but it’s more than just a name; it represents an idea.
Hello! Let me introduce myself. …my name is Jay Berube and would like to capture your attention for at least another minute or two—if you can spare me the time. I want to tell a story.
I came up with the idea for Pajamas and Money yesterday, June 7th 2012. I believe that this blog has been in the making ever since I started to sell Pokémon cards back in the 3rd grade.
Two things are particularly spot-on about me ever since I was a child: I liked pajamas and I wanted money. When I was a kid I always talked to my parents, grandparents, brothers, and friends about making money. I used to fantasize about all the possible ways I could become a millionaire in the 3rd grade; but every idea that I had…was just that—and idea.
All the ideas I fashioned throughout middle school and high school were always just those ideas that never seemed to take flight. They were the wingless bird ideas, as I like to call them. They were like penguins. I thought they could fly, but as I grew older I came to understand— that they could not. Because of that I slowly gave up hope on the American Dream. Like most people eventually do, I started to rationalize with the aspirations I had in my childhood. I tried to tell the memory of my 8 year old self that his dreams were pointless.
I told myself that dreams were for children.
“You are going to major in some subject in college and live a comfortable, normal life. There will probably never be any opportunities that you will have to make a million dollars. You have the pajamas little jay berube, so you don’t need the money.”
But earlier this week I created a blog because of something in the back recesses of my mind. The idea was to start a blog for free and experiment with how many followers I could obtain. If I ever received enough followers, and that dream of mine seemed possible, I would buy a domain name, set up my own personal blog on the web and try to follow that dream.
That’s what I did earlier this week, but the end result wasn’t Pajamas and Money it was a blog plainly named J’s Blog.
J’s Blog for the last three days has been acting as an experimental platform to see how many followers I could gain in just a few days. I have blogged about various subjects ranging from Relationships, to Philosophy, to Running, and to Poetry. It took two days to get 45 followers and I wasn’t even trying very hard to market this blog. That’s when I started to believe that I might have a super small chance at making money from blogging, and maybe chase after my fading away dream.
That slight spark of excitement resulted in last night’s web browsing affair. I read article after article on “How to make money blogging.” Some blogs talked about SEO and others talked about how you should market your website to friends and family. And even other blogs had articles on the importance of good writing skills and how they lead to revenue from readers.
They all had their various “secrets” on how to make money through blogging— but every single one of them had one tip that was exactly the same. They all demanded that a serious blogger needed to have a Niche.I have heard this before but I didn’t really realize how important, necessary, and momentous it was. If someone really wanted to gain and keep thousands of followers, they need to have: a Niche.
I have not just stumbled on this information; it has always been right in front of my eyes. It has always been there when I analyzed the blogs in the internet that work. I realized that the bloggers I was most likely to Follow and return to their website again and again, were the bloggers who had a specific Niche. Now it didn’t matter what the Niche was, but as long as they had a Niche…they were set. And it seemed to me that the bloggers with the more specific Niche orientated blogs captivated my attention more, thus ending with me revisiting their blogs.
Because let’s face it, some nights I used to say, ‘Hey I want to read about “How to cook the best birthday cakes.”’ It’s insane because I don’t cook, but that’s the great thing about blogs…they allow you to search, read, and think about the thing that you want to search, read, or think about.
In the past if I ever wanted to read about something/anything that could captivate my attention for a few minutes…I would enter a blog. That’s also another great thing about blogs: they allow you to live in someone elses life for as long as you want; blogs allow you to view the world from another individuals perspective. And as I realized this I also realized that I had a significant problem: I didn’t have a Niche.
I didn’t know how to cook the best birthday cakes, I wasn’t a professional fitness trainer and currently I wasn’t staring down any life crises in my life that would be interesting to read and write about. Yes, I am a passionate cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track athlete but I’m not an Olympian and I didn’t want to write about exercise.
All of the topics I considered to blog about were just general topics. I needed a topic that I could write about that would make people want to revisit my blog over and over again. What topic could possibly make readers come back three or four times a week for years to come? What kind of story could be captivating, inspiring, and sincere enough to make people want to follow me: a country boy from a town nobody knows.
That’s when I came up with the idea for Pajamas and Money! I realized that writing about trying to make a million dollars would probably be my best option! It’s something that I’m serious about and really want. Frankly I feel that it’s captivating. And my intentions couldn’t be more straightforward and sincere. I’m not hiding behind a façade. I’m not trying to tell you I’m someone I’m not. I simply saying I want to try and make a million dollars. Theres NO catch. I’m not asking for your money, I’m not standing on the side of a street holding out my hat and hoping you will put money inside, I’m simply asking you if you will be interesting in seeing if a presumably insignificant blogger on the internet could make a million dollars, and if you were interested, well then stop by to see how im doing!
So that’s what im going to do. My blog is about trying to achieve the bloggers dream.
It’s also an interesting concept and idea to test out, because my readers will be directly linked to how I fair. The more readers that stop by my blog, the better I will do, and the closer I will get to my goal. And the closer and closer I get to my goal the more and more my readers will want to stay updated on me. If it all falls into place how it hypothetically should, it will be snowball effect. So lets test out my idea.
And here I am now! Pajamas and Money has been created and I have created a check list of what I want to carry out.
To make a million dollars within ten years or less.
Now, I don’t want to get too excited. Presently I have zero followers….lol. But I do need to stay focused. So I have created a loose series of events that will take place if everything works out as planned. So far I have not invested any money into Pajamas and Money, and I don’t really want to unless I see the results. It may be within a few weeks, or months, or years down the road; but I want to have at least enough followers on WordPress before I go out and try the real world.
I will decide on that number later on in the future of Pajamas and Money, but that’s all you really need to know.
After that I guess it’s really up to how much support I get. I don’t really know how this will end up and I don’t’ know if I will ever make it to my dream. But that’s the great thing about dreams; you don’t have to always achieve them to still get something out of them. The chase is almost exciting enough.
If you believe in my dream, then Follow me. You can go right back to the home page and click “follow.” Remember, try to stop in twice or three times in a week to see how I am doing. Now just so you know I don’t plan on “blogging” several times a week. I simply don’t have the time. But I do plan on posting updates and statistics on how my blog is doing to keep you interested. Read them and comment if you’re a strong supporter! It will make me feel so much more confident in my blog if my followers are engaged and enthusiastic about my goals.
And that’s about it! Thanks for reading! My blog is here primarily to gain supporters and hopefully someday make a million dollars, it just so happens that it’s a great form of entertainment as well!
Remember. I have the Pajamas… now all I need is the Money.
This is me when I was 8 years old. My oldest brother Jesse is on my right. And Lees on my left.
